Maria was the granddaughter of one of the original settlers of Los Angeles and became one of the first women landowners in California with her ownership of Rancho Rodeo de las Aguas, now the location of Beverly Hills. She ran cattle ranching, farming, and gardening operations, and was well known for holding a yearly celebratory rodeo under a famous eucalyptus tree.
