(1801-1880) Louisa was the first woman in the United States to vote in a general election. She cast her ballot on September 6, 1870, in Laramie, Wyoming. In her early life she was an orphan from the east coast and decided to head west with her husband to follow their oldest son, unknowingly set to be a pioneer for women’s rights for the following century.
